Boston is one of the oldest cities in the continental USA and as such has a variety of things to see and do. History of course is a front-runner, but one of the ‘must sees’ is the Museum of Fine Arts. You’ll find it at 465 Huntington Ave and the collection has a little bit, but not too much, of everything. The new wing is an architectural triumph and the paintings, Egyptian collection, the America’s wing and even the shop arte standouts in a standout place. Plan on spending at least 3-4 hours here.
If you have your walking boots on, then a morning spent strolling the North End is time well spent. This older, Italian neighborhood is home to shops and boutiques, restaurants and cafes. You’ll see plenty of history, plus a lot of people (people watching is a specialty!). Hanover St is where you want to end up, but essentially, all of it is fascinating. Wander the side streets such as Salem and Prince where you’ll find delightful restaurants like Antico Forno, and Little Monica’s. There are delis galore so if you need to stock up on genuine olive oil, balsamic a> and cured meats before you go home, here’s where to do it!
Of course, if you’re here for the history, you have to start with Faneuil Hall. This solid, respectable looking building is a ‘must do’ on everybody’s list and carries atop it one of the symbols of Boston – the weather vane grasshopper. It’s now a market place with indoor and outdoor facilities, shops and eating places. You’ll find it in the water front area and it’s also a stop on the Freedom Trail.
If you know your presidential history, you’ll know Boston as the seat of JFK and the Kennedy family in general. The JFK Presidential Museum and Library makes its home in Boston and you can relive the fabled Kennedy era between these walls. The tour includes a short film and a time line of the presidency all set in a pretty cottage close to the water.
Boston’s Beacon Hill is a toney neighborhood full of gaslight, cobble stoned streets and red-brick elegance. Walking the area gives you an up close and personal look at the respectable area. Walk to the top of the hill and enjoy one of the finer views in Boston. There are boutiques to shop in and cafes and restaurants to recover in. You’ll love it.
