For many visitors to San Francisco, checking out a few of the many upscale art museums is a special way to spend some time, and not spend a bunch of cash. The environment here is unique to say the least, and very “artsy”, with a long history of fine art. One would expect quiet browsing past countless paintings, sculptures and such.

Not so in San Francisco’s quite famous 111 Minna Gallery, where scoping out current and ever-popular art of today is available Monday through Friday. Well out of ordinary, you are entertained by musicians, as well as enjoy cheap eats and drinks at the on-site “Happy Hour”. How many Art Museums’ have you visited lately that offers a happy hour? A popular place for lunch from noon-4 PM, and now Friday Happy Hour from 5PM-2AM at the Gallery offers Live DJ’s and dancing too.

If you plan carefully and visit the Golden Gate Park on the 3rd Wednesday of the month, you can enjoy a thrilling time at the California Academy of Sciences. You’ll have the opportunity to engage with Marine Biologists and the nearly 5,000 animals in the Steinhart Aquarium. In fact, if you’re lucky, you may even have the opportunity to feed the aquatic residents, and that’s not only the kids, but Mon and Dad too.


For those visitors traveling with children, another free and fun place to visit is the Wells Fargo History Museum located Downtown San Francisco. Experience the rich history of the California Gold Rush Era. Learn with interactive displays about life back then, see actual artifacts from those days and see what real gold nuggets look like. It’s a perfect way to spend quality and learning time with the youngsters, and even get a photo or two on a real stagecoach.

Any visitor to San Francisco’s Downtown Warf who doesn’t experience the famous Cable Car Ride up the hill made famous by Rice-A-Roni, is missing a great free time, and “photo op”. But the fun doesn’t end there; in fact a visit to the Cable Car Museum in the historic Washington/Mason Cable Car Barn is a true experience not to be missed. Among other things on display, there are three 1870’s Era antique cable cars on display.

To experience over 6,000 years of Chinese history in art, a visit to the Asian Art Museum offers something you just can’t experience anywhere else in the world. On display is the oldest known Chinese Buddha for you to experience. There’s also a very impressive collection of Asian art, pottery, paintings, textiles and more. And the best part is, you get to experience it for free on the first Tuesday of each month, or every Thursday after five PM, for only $5.

After enjoying some of San Francisco’s best free museums, you may desire to experience relaxation with a glass or two of California’s most luscious wines, for free of course. Lost Canyon Winery located nearby in Oakland on the waterfront, offers free tastings Friday and Saturday between 1-6 PM. That’s what we call the best of all “happy hours”, free.
